During an inauguration day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reinvent” America's largest city, promising “a new era” and an bold start to his tenure.

A Groundbreaking Mayor

The young political star, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A moment like this is rare and even more uncommon is it that the citizens whose grasp the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani remarked.

Ignoring counsel to lower expectations, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will govern boldly and broadly.”

Adhering to Democratic Socialist Principles

Mamdani openly embraced his socialist politics. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not abandon my principles for concern of being called radical,” he said to rapturous applause.

The inauguration was a two-part event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's rise as a victory over powerful interests.

A Costly Policy Agenda

Mamdani now faces one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a platform promising:

• Subsidized daycare
• Free buses
• A halt to rent increases for about 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion expense of these initiatives may be challenging to fund. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing External Challenges

The new mayor must contend with skepticism from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past comments regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past tweets.

Mamdani has sought to smooth over these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was reportedly surprisingly productive.

The Fundamental Challenges of Governing

Ultimately, New York mayors are judged on their success in delivering essential functions: trash collection, curbing the rodent problem, fixing roadways, and making sure reliable transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's public safety record, pointing to record low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with murders recorded.

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky piece of advice about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his speech with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
