Dallas Cowboys Proprietor Jerry Jones Penalized $250,000 for ‘Inadvertent’ Obscene Gesture toward Fans

The National Football League has imposed a substantial $250,000 fine on Cowboys proprietor Jones for what he claims was an “inadvertent” obscene gesture directed at attendees during a Sunday’s game at the Jets’ stadium.

Widely circulated footage seemed to capture Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, though he insists he was actually signaling approval to Dallas supporters present at the game as his team clinched a 37-22 victory.

“It was unfortunate. That was kind of an exchange with Cowboys supporters seated near me,” Jones stated during a Tuesday interview. “Present was a large group of Dallas supporters—not New York fans, Cowboys fans. The entire stadium was filled with enthusiasm for the Dallas team.”

He further clarified that the signal was completely accidental, happening amid the elation following the team’s last score. “I simply put up the wrong finger,” he noted. “It was accidentally done. This is sincere. Should you call it accidental, you can. But it got corrected pretty quick.”

Historical Context for Owner Penalties

This incident isn’t the initial instance an NFL owner has been penalized for misconduct. Recent cases include:

  • Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper was penalized $300K for tossing a beverage at fans in early 2024.
  • Former Titans owner Bud Adams was issued a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a comparable obscene gesture.

Jones, a figure who is recognized for his media savvy, reportedly has an estimated net worth of around $16bn, making the penalty easily payable for the billionaire owner.

Offseason Controversies and Public Attention

The incident comes after a contentious preseason for Jones, who encountered widespread criticism from the Cowboys fanbase after the team dealt key pass rusher Parsons to the Green Bay Packers.

Additionally, Jones was a prominent subject in a Netflix documentary that examined his influence in developing the Cowboys into the world’s highest-worth athletic organization, even with its modern-era title shortcomings.

The NFL’s action to penalize Jones underscores its ongoing initiative to uphold proper behavior among all team officials, regardless of their position or financial standing.
