In late October 2024, the situation was completely distinct. Ahead of the national election, reflective Americans could acknowledge the nation's deep flaws – its injustices and inequality – however they still could see it as the United States. A democracy. A place where legal governance meant something. A state guided by a honorable and upright public servant, despite his elderly years and increasing frailty.

These days, this autumn, numerous citizens scarcely know the nation we inhabit. Individuals believed to be unauthorized foreigners are collected and forced into vans, sometimes blocked from fair treatment. The left side of the presidential residence – is undergoing demolition for a grotesque event space. Donald Trump is persecuting his opponents or supposed enemies and demanding legal authorities hand over a massive sum of citizen dollars. Soldiers with weapons are being sent to US urban areas on false pretexts. The military command, renamed the Defense Ministry, has effectively freed itself of day-to-day journalistic scrutiny while it uses potentially totaling almost one trillion dollars from citizen taxes. Universities, law firms, news companies are yielding from leader's menaces, and rich magnates are treated like members of the royal family.

“The United States, only a few months ahead of its 250-year mark as the planet's foremost free society, has tipped over the brink into authoritarianism and fascism,” an American historian, stated recently. “Finally, swifter than I imagined possible, it occurred here.”

Each day begins amid recent atrocities. And it's hard to comprehend – and agonizing to acknowledge – how severely declined our nation is, and the speed at which it unfolded.

However, it is known that the president was duly elected. Despite his profoundly alarming previous administration and following the cautions linked to the knowledge of the conservative plan – even after Trump himself stated openly he would be a dictator solely at the start – enough Americans elected him instead of his Democratic opponent.

While alarming as today's circumstances are, it's more daunting to understand that we are just nine months into this presidential term. How will another 36 months of this downfall find us? And if that period becomes something even longer, since there is no one to restrain this president from determining that another term is required, maybe for security concerns?

Admittedly, there is still hope. There are congressional elections next year which might bring a different balance of power, if Democrats recapture one or both houses of the legislature. We have elected officials who are attempting to apply a degree of oversight, for example lawmakers currently initiating an inquiry into the attempted fund seizure from the justice department.

And a national vote three years from now could start the path to recovery exactly as last year’s election placed us on this unfortunate course.

There are countless citizens protesting in public spaces across municipalities, as they did last weekend during anti-authority protests.

An ex-cabinet member, stated lately that “the dormant powerhouse of the US is stirring”, similar to past post-McCarthyism in the 1950s or throughout the Vietnam war protests or throughout the Nixon controversy.

On those occasions, the tilting vessel finally returned to balance.

The author states he recognizes the signs of that awakening and observes it occurring at present. For proof, he references the recent massive protests, the extensive, bipartisan pushback regarding a television host's removal and the almost universal defiance by media to accept military mandates they report only approved content.

“The dormant force always remains inactive until certain corruption grows too toxic, some action so offensive toward public welfare, specific cruelty so loud, that he is forced but to awaken.”

It’s an optimistic take, and I appreciate the author's seasoned opinion. Maybe he’ll be validated.

Meanwhile, the crucial issues remain: will the nation return to normalcy? Can it retrieve its position globally and its devotion to legal principles?

Or should we recognize that the national endeavor functioned for a period, and then – swiftly, totally – ended?

My pessimistic brain indicates that the latter is true; that everything could be finished. My positive feelings, though, convinces me that we have to attempt, through all methods available.

For me, as an observer of the press, that’s about encouraging reporters to live up, more completely, to their duty of holding power to account. For some people, it may be participating in political races, or planning demonstrations, or discovering methods to protect voting rights.

Not even one year prior, we existed in an alternate reality. In the future? Or after another term? The fact is, we are uncertain. The only option is to strive to not give up.
